Members and Friends:
Welcome to the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, Saint John, New Brunswick website.
Saint John, being on the Bay of Fundy and at the confluence of two great rivers, Saint John and the Kennebecasis has a sense of space and freedom that is unequaled.
Congregation Shaarei Zedek has remained active and vibrant, even through
periods of declining membership and not having a full-time rabbi.
I have had four children attend the Hebrew School and have their Bar or Bat Mitzvah from our bimah. All of my children have had the pleasure of working, for at least one summer, as summer students at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. They have participated in Camp Kadimah, in Barss Corner, Nova Scotia, and traveled to Israel as participants in the March of the Living and Birthright Israel. They have also participated in the Asper Foundation Human Rights and Holocaust Studies program, including a trip to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.
Although we are small, the opportunities for education and experience are not few, based on our affiliations with the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and the Atlantic Jewish Council.
During my years as a member of the Congregation, I have witnessed our move to egalitarianism, and to a new Synagogue building that is a great treasure and source of pride for the community.
It is a unique and comfortable place where we gather to learn, pray, sing, celebrate, meditate, do mitzvah work and research, socialize, and support one another.
Since the move to our new facility, an energetic immigration program has brought new life and broader Jewish culture to our Congregation.
Our current Board reflects our diversity and I am proud of the dedication and excellent skill sets that our Directors bring to the service of the community.
I invite you to find your place in our community or to join the large number of non-Jews who continue to support and participate in our initiatives. Welcome to Congregation Shaarei Zedek in Saint John.
President, Congregation Shaarei Zedek
