According to Choice Theory, there are five basic human needs as represented by the fingers of the hand: Survival (the thumb, safety and security), Freedom (the index finger, choice), Power (the middle finger, control), Love and Belonging (the ring finger, connection) and Fun (the little finger, enjoyment). We could live without our little finger, but it would be difficult to live without our thumb. We currently have needs that must be fulfilled. “May it be so.”
